Group Film Titles

Enter the following information in the comments section of this post:

Media Analysis Report

  • Choose an international film that you want to analyze (note: a copy must be available and submitted together with the final report
  • Proposed titles need to be published on the above post on 1 March
  • I will approve or suggest a new title on 4 March (Check this blog)
  • Each member of your group must watch the film and have a group discussion to analyze the film
  • A minimum 20-page hard copy report must be turned in on 29 March
  • A copy of the film (DVD or computer file) must be turned in together with the report
  • See below for a list of questions to be answered in your report

Questions for Media Analysis Report

  1. Describe the overall summary of the film and introduce the main characters. List the country of origin, location, and location(s) of the film.
  2. Is the film adapted from fiction or drama, or is it based on an original idea and screenplay? If it is an adaptation, does it follow the original and neglect the cinematic opportunities of the story? Or does it sacrifice the original work for unnecessary cinematic devices? If the story is original, how fresh or innovative is it?
  3. Are the characters believable? Is there plot believable?
  4. What is the theme of the film? Is it obvious or only subtly evident? Do the plot, acting, and other elements in the film successfully impart the theme to the viewer? What is the relationship between the title of the film and the theme?
  5. Is the cinematography effective? Does the film make certain use of color, texture, lighting, etc. to enhance the theme, mood, setting?
  6. Are camera angles used effectively? Are they ever used for a particular effect?
  7. Does the film make use of symbols or symbolism? What purpose do the symbols serve? Are they used effectively? How does the symbolism in the film contribute to or enhance the film’s overall theme?
  8. What is the message that the Director and Producer is trying to communicate to the audience?
  9. How does the film represent the country of origin? How does the country of origin influence how the film is made?
  10. Write down comments from each member of your group about the film.

  • Use multimedia (images, audio, and video) to highlight key elements in the media system of your country.
  • If you use video, make sure its in .wmv format (flash videos or .flv cannot be played directly)
  • All students are expected to participate in class (this will affect your IPG mark)
